4: Balance sensory inputs.
All of us make sense of the space around us in slightly different ways. Some of us are more impacted by certain types of sensory stimuli, or do not use certain senses (i.e. Deaf/hard of hearing or blind people).
INSTRUCTIONS:
Listen to Beq talk about designing for sensory needs and what they call “dynamic disability.”
Jump to 1:10 in the second video and watch til ~2:50 to learn a little about sensory integration, or the way that we make sense of and balance the sensory stimuli around us.
REFLECTION:
Can you think of a built space that could be overwhelming to people who have difficulty balancing multiple sensory stimuli, i.e. a space that has bold prints/patterns/colors, lots of noise, and/or is very busy? How can we rethink this space to offer respite from overwhelm?
How might spaces be different if we designed them knowing that some people cannot see or hear at all? What makes a space beautiful or intriguing if it cannot be seen?
