The Americans with Disabilities Act hasn’t evolved much in its 30+ years, but our understanding of disability certainly has! What does it mean to make spaces that go beyond basic access for the 1 billion people worldwide who live with disability? How can designers enable “disabled joy”? This course was informed by diverse disabled folks who were compensated for their contributions, and 15% of profits are shared with the AT Lab.

More than 1/3 of the American population is plus size. It’s simply good business to make our offices, restaurants, retail, and public spaces reflect this through size-inclusive spatial design and furniture selection. Our best practices come directly from plus size people who generously gave their time to help shape this education.

Embodying Inclusive Design

This course does double duty as an introduction to inclusive design AND a team destressing activity! We'll tap into our own body awareness as a means of becoming familiar with the spectrum of physical needs, do a gentle stretch, and leave with examples of design choices that can improve comfort and access for a wide range of people.

Alt-Text as Poetry

Want to be a disability justice ally? Learn how to write great alt-text for architectural (and all other) imagery so that low-vision folks have joyful digital experiences and can engage with your organization’s work. This engaging workshop is great for anyone who dabbles in websites or social media, or simply wants to be more inclusive online. Content is based off the Alt-Text as Poetry project.

Biophilic Design

People spend about 90% of their time indoors. The “biophilic hypothesis” introduced by Edward O. Wilson suggests that humans have an innate connection to nature. We all need daylight, access to the outdoors, and reminders of our natural origins within our constructed spaces, or we will never be truly at ease.
In this course, we’ll talk about the proven positive health effects of including biophilic design in building projects, and get creative about how to bring our favorite natural elements into our own spaces.
